A man swallowed by whale video has gone viral online. It shows a humpback whale scooping up a kayaker in Chile. The video shocked millions. But what really happened?
In southern Chile, Adrián Simancas was kayaking with his father, Dell. They were in the frigid waters of the Strait of Magellan, close to the San Isidro Lighthouse. A massive humpback whale suddenly leaped out of the water. For a few seconds, Adrián and his yellow boat were engulfed by its gaping jaws.
Just a few feet away, Dell was recording the scene. “Remain calm, remain calm,” he yelled as his son vanished into the whale’s maw. After a few seconds, the man who had been swallowed by the whale was spotted floating safely back up. He was unharmed and had a life jacket.
According to Adrián, he believed he was going to die. He claimed to have felt something slimy on his face. He was surrounded by white and dark blue hues. He believed it was the end because he was so terrified. However, the whale released him.
What Experts Say
Some believe the man was attacked by the whale. However, scientists deny this. They think it happened by accident. According to whale specialist Dr. Jooke Robbins, humpback whales hunt by lunging through schools of fish. They hunt small meals like sardines and krill by opening their jaws wide.
Other objects, like a kayak or even a man sucked up by a whale, can occasionally get in the way. Adrián was probably invisible to the whale. It unintentionally picked him up while seeking for food. It had no desire to consume him.
Dr. Iain Kerr, another specialist, asserts that whales are incapable of swallowing humans. They have too narrow a throat. It is impossible for a man to get deep within a whale. He adds that whales have no desire to harm people. Their jaws would be broken and too much energy would be used.
Man Swallowed by Whale: A Rare But Real Danger
It is not the first time this has occurred. According to a Cape Cod lobster diver in 2021, a whale spit him out after picking him up. Two women were knocked from a kayak by a whale in California in 2020. Despite landing in the whale’s mouth, they were unharmed.
It is uncommon for a man to be swallowed by a whale. However, scientists advise people to avoid close contact with whales. Staying at least 100 yards away is required under U.S. law. Whales are large and strong animals. They are also susceptible to harm. Many are being killed by pollutants, fishing lines, and ships.
Dell and Adrián were fortunate. They returned safely to shore. According to the man the whale swallowed, the whale might have been inquisitive or attempting to communicate. He still honours the sea and the animal.
